Elder Scrolls fans get terrible update on Skyrim sequel’s release

Polygon · 1 month ago

Fans of The Elder Scrolls have been told they still face a lengthy wait for The Elder Scrolls 6, the long-anticipated sequel to Skyrim. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, speaking during a live Q&A, the game remains "at least two or more years away" from completing development. The update matters because Microsoft, facing difficulties in its Xbox division, is reportedly planning to "double down" on its biggest franchises, placing added pressure on Bethesda to deliver a title that was first announced eight years ago.

If Bethesda does finish the game within that window, TES6 will have taken roughly a decade to develop, a timeline the article attributes to the game's scale and to reported dysfunction within Xbox's management. For comparison, the piece notes that early work on Grand Theft Auto 6 began around 2014, while Final Fantasy XV reportedly took around a decade to complete. Bethesda underwent layoffs in July, though these mainly affected teams working on The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 rather than TES6, which remains the studio's main focus. CEO Todd Howard has said the game is far enough along to be play-tested, albeit with builds that are not always stable.
