US President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire with Iran was "over" and ordered fresh bombing raids on Wednesday night, after describing the country's leaders as "cuckoo" and "scum" at a Nato summit in Turkey. The renewed strikes mark a sharp escalation in hostilities between Washington and Tehran, with Trump threatening to target Iran's bridges, electricity grid and water-treatment plants, and warning that further action "will get much worse".

The latest attacks followed US raids on Tuesday night, described as "punishment" after tankers came under fire in the Strait of Hormuz. More than 80 US air strikes hit military facilities, including vessels used to harass tankers and air-defence systems, with Iranian state media reporting eight deaths. The US also revoked Iran's licence to sell oil on global markets under a memorandum of understanding agreed last month. In response, Iran struck US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, declared the agreement "dead", and claimed to have shot down a US MQ-9 drone and damaged 85 US facilities.
