Preview: Orbitals’ Cosmic Anime Co-op Made Me Feel Like A Kid Again
Nintendo Life has published a hands-on preview of Orbitals, a co-op sci-fi adventure exclusive to the Switch 2, following a session hosted by publisher Kepler Interactive. The writer played the opening 50 minutes and came away highly enthusiastic, praising the game's faithful recreation of the look and feel of classic Japanese anime. The preview matters as an early, positive impression of a title first revealed at The Game Awards 2025, ahead of its launch later this year.
Developed by Shapefarm, Orbitals is a co-op-only game in the vein of It Takes Two and Split Fiction, in which players control space explorers Maki and Omura trying to save their home station from a cosmic storm. It deliberately runs at 24fps (12fps for background details) to mimic anime movement, and draws stylistic comparisons to Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon and Cowboy Bebop. The gameplay centres on tool-based co-op puzzles where players choose their own abilities rather than having them fixed by character, alongside shared spaceship sections with unlockable upgrades such as weapons, a fan and an electric bolt. Orbitals releases on Switch 2 on 3rd September.
