Push Square has highlighted Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, an upcoming anime-styled football game from Bandai Namco, as a potential PlayStation 5 must-play for fans enjoying the ongoing World Cup. The game is a substantially expanded sequel to a fairly well-received PS4 title and is based on Yoichi Takahashi's celebrated 1980s sports manga. Its over-the-top anime presentation is pitched as a refreshing alternative to the more conventional EA Sports FC formula, though the writer laments that it will not be released in time for the tournament itself.

The game offers a range of modes, including a story campaign inspired by the original manga plot alongside expanded storylines, a full suite of competitive multiplayer options, and various international teams. The trailer also confirms some real-world club sides, such as Argentina's Boca Juniors. Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters launches on 28th August, with pre-orders including Japan's national team jersey; Deluxe and Ultimate editions add further items, the latter bundling a Season Pass promising three as-yet-unannounced DLC packs.
