Persona 4 Revival’s take on the controversial Yosuke will apparently be “more fitting for the world we live in now”

Atlus is remaking Persona 4 as Persona 4 Revival, and in a recent interview the Persona Team's general producer Kazuhisa Wada indicated that the character Yosuke Hanamura will be rewritten to suit modern sensibilities. This matters because Yosuke, the protagonist's close friend, was widely criticised for homophobic and lecherous behaviour in the original game, and fans have been curious about how the remake would handle such dated material.

Speaking to Anime Corner, Wada said Yosuke was "a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes," and that the team "wanted to lighten that up and make it a little bit more fitting for the world we live in now." He stressed that little else about the story or characters would change, with the adjustments being "mostly Yosuke, really." Much of Yosuke's original conduct involved jokes at the expense of Kanji Tatsumi, a party member heavily implied to be gay. The Rock Paper Shotgun writer expressed mixed feelings, hoping the remake would confront these issues rather than quietly soften them, and noted the game is due out next year.
