Witches, Swords, and Vampires: The Blood of Dawnwalker’s Skill Trees Explained
IGN has published an in-depth look, as part of its monthly IGN First coverage, at the character-progression systems in Rebel Wolves' vampire RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker. The piece explains that protagonist Coen can be built across three distinct skill trees — witchcraft, swordmastery and vampirism — each offering its own active abilities and passive perks, and that players can either specialise in one school or blend all three. The design matters because the trees are shaped by Coen's curse: witchcraft can only be used by day when he is human, vampiric powers only at night, and swordmastery at any time, meaning build choices influence not just combat style but which quests and storylines become available.
Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz and creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz describe an aim of balancing passive boosts with active, game-changing skills and encouraging synergies between them. The vampirism (Vrakhiri) tree offers 10 abilities and 20 perks; witchcraft has 31 nodes split into 21 passive perks and 10 active abilities, though several spells cost blood — the Ravenous Flock summon, for example, requires two activation charges and 40% of Coen's health. Swordmastery, described as the most combat-interlinked tree, features 22 perks and seven abilities, including the brute-force Charge and the defensive Walking Fortress, which builds activation charge through perfect blocks; spells generally rely on charges gathered by blocking during combat.
