HyperMegaTech Super Pocket Rare Edition Review

IGN · 1 month ago

IGN has reviewed the HyperMegaTech Super Pocket Rare Edition, the seventh Super Pocket handheld from Blaze Entertainment and part of the wider Evercade ecosystem. The device uses the same hardware as earlier models but comes preloaded with 14 classic games developed by Rare, alongside a matching colour scheme, spanning the studio's earliest 1983 British computer releases through to its headline 1998 Nintendo 64 title, Banjo-Kazooie, which has been rebuilt to run natively. The reviewer concludes that its eclectic library and ability to play any Evercade cartridge allow it to maintain the strong relative value of its predecessors.

Priced at $69.99, the plug-and-play handheld is a compact, Game Boy-adjacent size with a 2.8-inch IPS display (320 x 240, 4:3), membrane buttons, front and rear speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 3000mAh battery offering around four hours of use, though it lacks brightness adjustment and Bluetooth audio. The built-in titles originally appeared across the ZX Spectrum, Nintendo 64, NES, SNES and Game Boy Color, and include Battletoads, Jetpac, Knight Lore, Atic Atac and Conker's Pocket Tales. The reviewer praises the vivid ZX Spectrum visuals and responsive controls, but notes the small screen may not suit older players, some Spectrum titles are an acquired taste, and certain games suffer from grating sound or awkward hover controls.

  • Blaze's seventh Super Pocket bundles 14 Rare games for $69.99.
  • Banjo-Kazooie is rebuilt to run natively, not emulated.
  • Good value, though screen, sound and some controls draw criticism.
