Anthrax have released the Joel Harlow-directed music video for "The Edge Of Perfection", the second single from their forthcoming twelfth studio album, "Cursum Perficio". The record is due out on 18 September 2026 via Megaforce in the United States and Nuclear Blast in Europe, and marks the band's first album in a decade, following 2016's "For All Kings", which reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. The album title is Latin for "My journey is over" or "I complete my journey".

Guitarist Scott Ian described the track as "the greatest Anthrax song in the history of Anthrax", saying it was written about his family and his pursuit of happiness. Drummer Charlie Benante, who composes most of the band's material, said he had written the music before the pandemic, and explained that the decade-long gap came because he initially did not feel he had anything to say, with COVID later setting the band back around two years. Benante noted the album mixes older material — such as "Target On My Back", dating from 2015 — with newer songs, and referenced other emotionally weighted tracks including "The Long Goodbye", written about Ian's late father, who had Alzheimer's. The first single, "It's For The Kids", was released in May.

How this story developed

  • 4 months ago Anthrax have released the Joel Harlow-directed music video for "The Edge Of Perfection", the second single from their forthcoming twelfth studio album, "Cursum Perficio".

Explained simply

Anthrax is a heavy metal band that formed in the 1980s and has remained active in the music scene since. They are now returning with their first album in ten years, following an extended gap in new recordings.

The band's previous album came out in 2016, and drummer Charlie Benante, who writes most of the band's material, has explained that the ten-year gap occurred because he initially felt he had nothing meaningful to express, with the COVID-19 pandemic then delaying the band by roughly two years. The new album, titled "Cursum Perficio", features a mixture of older material with newly composed songs.

Some tracks carry personal meaning for band members, touching on themes such as family and loss. This personal dimension underscores the significance of the band's return after such a prolonged absence.
