Disney+ has greenlit a television series based on Stuart Gibbs' long-running Spy School book franchise, with Ryan Reynolds' production company Maximum Effort joining as executive producer. The novels, which began publication in 2012 and continue with a new entry forthcoming this autumn, centre on a teenage protagonist who discovers his recruitment into an elite academy is actually the Central Intelligence Agency's covert training programme. Chris Fedak, known for creating the spy-comedy series Chuck and writing the action film Ambulance, will pen the adaptation and serve as executive producer.

The project marks another expansion by the streaming platform into young adult literary properties, following well-received adaptations of Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Goosebumps. Reynolds brings considerable production experience and star appeal to the venture, having recently wrapped the fifth season of his sports documentary Welcome to Wrexham; he maintains an active slate of upcoming projects across multiple studios. The series is being produced by 20th Television under an existing partnership with Reynolds' company, though no premiere date has been set.
