Tech Investor Vinod Khosla to Acquire the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks for $9.6 Billion
Venture capitalist and Sun Microsystems co-founder Vinod Khosla has agreed to purchase the Seattle Seahawks for $9.6 billion from the Paul Allen estate, marking one of the largest valuations ever for a professional sports franchise. Khosla, worth approximately $13.7 billion, won the bidding process against several competitors including Aditya Mittal, significantly exceeding the team's prior $6.59 billion valuation and approaching the $10 billion benchmark set by recent basketball ownership transfers.
The Khosla family will structure ownership with his wife Neeru, co-founder of the CK12 Foundation education non-profit, as the controlling owner, whilst their son Neal, CEO of healthcare startup Curai, assumes a leadership position. Khosla's acquisition follows the modern pattern of NFL ownership transfers involving investors with existing stakes in other franchises; he must divest his San Francisco 49ers equity to comply with league regulations limiting control-owner holdings. The transaction represents only the third significant team sale in professional football over the past ten years.
