Declan Rice winning fitness battle to start for England against Argentina
Declan Rice is expected to shake off illness in time to start for England in their World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday in Atlanta. The Arsenal midfielder was substituted at half-time in the quarter-final win over Norway after Thomas Tuchel revealed he had spent much of the previous three days in bed unwell, but he is now reported to be feeling much improved and should partner Elliot Anderson in midfield against the reigning champions.
England also face fitness questions over defender Ezri Konsa, who was withdrawn against Norway with cramp but is expected to be fit to start at right-back, while Reece James and Bukayo Saka could come into contention after impressing as substitutes. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has urged his teammates to stay level-headed against Argentina, in what will be the sides' first World Cup meeting since 2002, and said England will not be distracted by facing Lionel Messi or the fixture's history, adding that authorities in Atlanta are on high alert with unsegregated seating expected for thousands of fans from both nations.
