The ‘Community’ Movie Officially Gets Its Most Encouraging Update Yet

Collider ·

The Community movie remains in slow but steady development, according to Steve Levy, vice president of Dan Harmon's production company and an executive producer on the film. Speaking on the podcast Six Seasons & a Podcast, Levy said the deliberately unhurried pace is by design, as the team searches for one final Greendale story worthy of the franchise, rather than rushing to meet fan demand.

Levy said he discusses the movie with Harmon on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and recently had dinner with Harmon, co-writer Andrew Guest and star Joel McHale to review progress. Harmon first confirmed he was writing the film in 2021, telling Vulture he faced a "philosophical" challenge over how much continuity to draw on, and in 2022 told Newsweek to expect it "between one and eight years" from then. Plans to begin filming in 2023 were derailed partly by that year's Hollywood labour strikes, and Levy said scheduling remains difficult given the cast's high demand, though he insisted no single person is holding up the project and that everyone remains keen to make it.

  • Harmon, cast and writers meet regularly to discuss progress
  • 2023 filming plans stalled partly due to Hollywood strikes

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The deliberate, unhurried approach actually demonstrates responsible stewardship of the franchise. Rather than rushing to meet fan pressure, Dan Harmon and the team are prioritising finding a story truly worthy of Community's legacy, which is precisely what fans should want. The regular meetings between Harmon, cast members, and producers, including the recent dinner with Joel McHale and Andrew Guest, show genuine sustained engagement, not abandonment, and the scheduling challenges reflect the cast's professional success rather than lackadaisical commitment.

The case against

Five years after Harmon confirmed he was writing the script, there remains no announced completed screenplay, confirmed filming schedule, or concrete release timeline beyond a vague estimate of "between one and eight years." Generic assurances about finding the right story and casting conflicts are common explanations for projects stuck in development limbo, and without tangible production evidence, audiences may reasonably doubt whether this film will ever materialise, as many announced projects never reach production.

Explained simply

Community was a comedy television series that ran for six seasons and developed a passionate fanbase. The show followed a group of students at a community college, and viewers and creators have long hoped to continue the story with a film.

Creator Dan Harmon has been writing the film since 2021, working with co-writer Andrew Guest and star Joel McHale. Rather than rushing to please fans, the team has deliberately taken time to find a story worthy of the show.

Initial plans to begin filming in 2023 were disrupted by that year's Hollywood strikes, and the cast's demanding schedules continue to complicate coordination. However, everyone involved remains committed to the project and continues working on it.
