When Campion first encountered Neill during pre-production for The Piano in Auckland, she was struck by his effortless charm and professionalism. Throughout filming, he demonstrated dedication both to his craft and to supporting the entire production, even offering feedback on technical elements whilst embodying the complex character of Stewart with remarkable intensity. Beyond his work in front of the camera, Neill cultivated deep friendships with those around him, including inviting Campion to experience New Zealand's natural beauty during personal visits.

Over three decades following their initial collaboration, Campion and Neill remained close confidants who shared life experiences and mutual support. When Neill received a cancer diagnosis, he characteristically responded with grace and creativity, authoring a memoir that Campion reviewed. Earlier in 2026, after appearing to achieve remission, Neill was unexpectedly hospitalised at St Vincent's in Sydney. During their final encounter, Campion found him in a state of serene peacefulness, occupied with creating watercolour sketches and discussing a Split Enz reunion concert, seemingly unburdened and grateful simply for her companionship.
