Willi Carlisle has announced his forthcoming double album, "The Universal Bubba," due out in November, produced by Tyler Childers – marking the first time Childers has produced a record other than his own. The pair's creative partnership grew out of touring together in Australia in early 2025, when shared conversations about music and poetry inspired Carlisle to write "The Mason Jar at the Center of the World," now the album's lead single. The collaboration matters as a notable pairing of two prominent voices in contemporary folk and country music, with Childers stepping behind the desk to shape the sound of a fellow artist for the first time.
The album was recorded in New Orleans in a DIY home studio, with Childers' band the Food Stamps also featuring on the record, echoing the intimate, live approach Childers used for his own album "Snipe Hunter." Carlisle, whose 2024 record "Critterland" was well received, said the sessions were driven by "luck, passion, and circumstance," with some songs completed in a couple of takes and others taking hours to develop. The two musicians also bonded over a shared interest in Eastern religion, which influences tracks such as "Marlboro Vinyasa," continuing themes present in Childers' own recent work.
