Another Spiderweb RPG that looks like it was made in 1993 drops on Kickstarter and immediately crushes its goal
Spiderweb Software’s latest role-playing game, Geneforge 3: Detonation, has launched on Kickstarter and passed its funding target within 24 hours. The article says this matters less as a surprise hit than as another sign of the studio’s unusually loyal niche audience and its track record of delivering old-school RPGs that look dated but are highly regarded by fans. It also highlights the continuing appeal of small, retro-styled PC RPGs when they offer depth, flexibility and a clear identity.
Geneforge 3: Detonation is a remake of the 2005 game Geneforge 3 and will largely follow the original while adding a modern interface, new characters, storylines, abilities and mechanics, including a mutation-focused “fuser” system. According to PC Gamer, this is Spiderweb’s sixth Kickstarter campaign, and its previous five were all funded, released and now hold “very positive” Steam ratings from a few hundred reviews. The campaign had already cleared its base goal and first stretch goal, with further targets at $60,000 for a new faction and $80,000 for a hidden storyline; the Kickstarter runs until 13 August, and the game is expected in early 2027.
