Musician R. Kelly has filed a formal request seeking a commutation of his 30-year federal prison sentence, convicted in 2021 on charges including racketeering, sexual exploitation of children, and sex trafficking. He subsequently received an additional 20-year sentence in 2023 for child pornography and enticement convictions, with both sentences running concurrently. The commutation request, submitted to the Department of Justice's Office of the Pardon Attorney, became public this week.

White House officials characterised the submission as a routine application through the public clemency portal, clarifying that the request is not currently under active review by the presidential clemency team. This follows Kelly's 2025 legal efforts—including a motion for a new trial and a bail request—which his attorney argued were necessary due to alleged threats to Kelly's safety in prison, though the bond request was dismissed by a federal judge.
