Prime Video has recast the lead role of Kratos in its upcoming "God of War" television adaptation after star Ryan Hurst was injured on set in June, Variety has confirmed. Hurst had been officially unveiled as Kratos in February and held a long-standing connection to the franchise, having previously voiced the Norse god Thor in the video game "God of War: Ragnarok". The episode is a significant setback for the high-profile series, forcing producers to find a new lead and reshoot already-filmed scenes, though Prime Video has declined to comment on the circumstances of the injury and no replacement actor has yet been named.

The Sony Pictures Television/Amazon MGM production now hopes to resume filming by mid-autumn once a new Kratos is cast. The series, which has a two-season order at Amazon and is led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, also stars Callum Vinson as Kratos's son Atreus, alongside Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur and Max Parker as Heimdall. It adapts the two most recent instalments of the PlayStation game series, following Kratos and Atreus as they scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos's late wife, while contending with the Norse pantheon.

God of War is a long-running PlayStation video game series centred on Kratos, a warrior from ancient Greece who later lives in a world based on Norse myths. The television version is being made for Prime Video by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

It draws on the most recent games, in which Kratos travels with his young son, Atreus, to fulfil the final wish of Kratos’s late wife, Faye. Their journey brings them into conflict with Norse gods including Odin, Thor and Baldur.

Kratos is the central role, so changing the actor can affect filming already completed as well as the production schedule. The series has been commissioned for two seasons and is being run by Ronald D. Moore.
