Sheffield Wednesday are reported to be progressing in talks to sign former Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell on a free transfer. The proposed move could strengthen their midfield as the club seek promotion from League One, following an active summer of recruitment.

The 25-year-old was released by Millwall after helping them reach the Championship play-offs, making 29 league appearances and starting 24. Wednesday have already made eight signings, retained Barry Bannan and added Callum Slattery; Mitchell is viewed as a potential defensive midfield option, having averaged two tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game last season.
