Sheffield cemeteries will have extra plots to cope with burial space crisis
Sheffield City Council plans to create extra burial plots at existing cemeteries as the city faces a shortage of space. The measures are intended to provide a short-term buffer, particularly for Muslim burials, while the council identifies land for new cemeteries.
The council estimates that overall burial capacity could run out within five to seven and a half years, while Muslim burial space may be exhausted in about three years. Expanding City Road Cemetery could add 60 to 80 graves and extend Muslim burial capacity by six to 12 months; a separate project at Stocksbridge could provide more than 750 plots.
- Sheffield faces a growing shortage of burial space.
- City Road could gain up to 80 additional graves.
- Longer-term plans include new cemetery sites.
