Blue Harbor & Variance Take U.S. To Sundance Pic ‘The Musical’ Starring Rob Lowe, Will Brill & Gillian Jacobs
Blue Harbor Entertainment and Variance Films have acquired US rights to "The Musical," a comedy that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, with a nationwide theatrical release set for 18 September 2026. The film marks the feature directorial debut of actress-turned-filmmaker Giselle Bonilla and stars Will Brill, Rob Lowe and Gillian Jacobs, giving the distributors a notable awards-circuit title to bring to wider audiences.
The story follows Doug Leibowitz (Brill), a disgruntled playwright turned middle-school theatre teacher, who plots revenge after discovering his ex-girlfriend (Jacobs) is dating his nemesis, school principal Brady (Lowe) — scheming to stage an inappropriate school play to sabotage Brady's chances of a prestigious award. Unapologetic Projects Partners is also teaming on the release, which was brokered by WME Independent. Blue Harbor, led by Amanda Sherwin, Mike Messina and Seth Needle, has recently released other Sundance-linked titles including "Ricky" and is also preparing to release the sci-fi thriller "Orion" this autumn.
