Sheffield Wednesday are reported to be close to signing former Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell on a free transfer. The potential move would strengthen the Owls’ midfield during their rebuild for League One, adding a player valued for his energy, discipline and defensive work rather than attacking output.

Mitchell, 25, left Millwall when his contract expired after six years in the first team, during which he made 196 appearances in all competitions, including 184 in the Championship. He made 29 appearances last season, but an ankle injury affected the closing stages; Watford and Scottish Premiership clubs have also been linked, although Wednesday are said to be hopeful of completing the deal.
