The film's renewed popularity comes as attention turns to this year's awards season, with another Weir adaptation, Project Hail Mary, tipped as an early Best Picture contender following its own strong critical and commercial reception.

The Martian grossed $653 million worldwide on its original release ($228 million domestically and $425 million internationally), a total comparable to Project Hail Mary's $682 million haul this year. It remains widely regarded as one of the standout science-fiction films of the 2010s. Scott's most recent genre outing, The Dog Stars, fared less well, receiving poor reviews and a weak box-office debut despite a cast including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce.
