Documentary filmmaker Sam Green, an Academy Award nominee, has released the first trailer for his new film "The Oldest Person in the World," which follows the shifting holder of the title of the world's oldest living person over a decade. Distributed by Assembly Releasing, the film begins its theatrical run on 10 September at New York's Angelika Film Center, expanding to Los Angeles and the Bay Area on 18 September before a wider national rollout, and arrives with Green already back in awards contention.

The documentary tracks each new record-holder as the title passes between supercentenarians, with Green's own reflections on time and mortality woven into the narrative; the current title-holder is 116-year-old Ethel May Caterham of Hampshire, England, who turns 117 on 21 August. The film has already screened at Sundance, SXSW, True/False, DC/DOX, Hot Docs, CPH:DOX and the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, among others. Green, known for "The Weather Underground" (2004 Oscar nominee), the Oscar-shortlisted "32 Sounds" (2023) and "The Measure of All Things" (2014), has said the film resists a "kooky" framing of its subjects, instead becoming a meditation on time, fate and the experience of being alive.
