Country songwriter and musician Gene Price is remembered 13 years after his death for his contribution to the Bakersfield sound and his collaborations with Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Although relatively little information about his life is available, his work connected him to some of the defining artists and recordings of mid-century country music.

Born in Shamrock, Texas, in 1944, Price played bass in Haggard’s backing band, the Strangers, from 1969 to 1970 and appeared on the acclaimed live album Okie from Muskogee. He also co-wrote numerous songs with Owens, including “In the Arms of Love”, while Aretha Franklin recorded his solo composition “Come To Me” twice; Price died aged 69.
