Father John Misty, the artistic moniker of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman, has unveiled a new single titled "The X-panded Universe" whilst simultaneously announcing a winter concert tour across multiple American cities. The dual announcement marks a significant point for the artist, representing both fresh material and a return to solo headlining performances.

The track constitutes the third standalone release from Tillman during the current calendar year, following "The Payoff" and "The Old Law," the latter having initially circulated among fans under an earlier working title, "God's Trash," after emerging in his live sets during autumn 2024. These releases arrive in the context of Mahashmashana, his sixth full-length work, which debuted in November 2024. Beyond studio output, Tillman has been workshopping unreleased compositions throughout 2026, notably during a high-profile appearance at Newport Folk Festival, where he deputised for another act and performed an predominantly acoustic set featuring several embryonic pieces.

"The X-panded Universe" was composed by Tillman and orchestrated by Drew Erickson, with both serving as producers. The piece commences with skeletal arrangements before progressively introducing richer instrumental textures, building towards ornate orchestral sections. Lyrically, the song constructs a surreal narrative populated with unusual figures including "Dr Valence" and a "Texas Candy heiress," with thematic explorations encompassing interdimensional phenomena and concepts of universal salvation. The composition concludes by repeatedly returning to the refrain "everyone gets saved" across its extended finale.

The touring schedule launches in December with performances in Boulder, Colorado on the 9th, progressing through Fort Collins, Santa Fe, Tucson, Napa, and Grass Valley, before culminating in consecutive performances at Carmel-by-the-Sea's Sunset Cultural Center on 18 and 19 December. Revenue from these concluding shows will benefit Big Sur Park School. Damien Jurado serves as the supporting act throughout. Ticket sales commence on 2 October at 10:00 a.m. local time through standard retail channels. Preceding the December run, a sold-out solo engagement takes place at Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre on 6 October.

The December tour marks Tillman's first solo headlining venture since 2013, situated within the context of sustained international touring activity throughout 2026. Earlier in the year, he undertook an extensive European campaign including a significant performance at London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire in June, with further dates continuing across North America through the autumn period. These December performances therefore represent a continuation of established touring momentum rather than an isolated engagement.
