Game Science reveals 15 minutes of Black Myth: Zhong Kui gameplay

Chinese developer Game Science has released 15 minutes of gameplay footage for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the sequel to its hit action title Black Myth: Wukong, offering the clearest look yet at the game's combat and protagonist, the mythological deity Zhong Kui. The footage points to a shift in design emphasis, with more regular enemy encounters populating the world rather than the largely boss-centric structure of its predecessor, alongside detailed animations featuring weapon clashes reminiscent of the martial arts-focused Phantom Blade Zero. The release matters as a rare substantive update on one of gaming's most anticipated sequels, following Wukong's huge commercial success.

The centrepiece of the video is a lengthy battle roughly halfway through against a large, moth-like humanoid boss covered in barnacles and scales, during which the player character summons and later takes direct control of a warrior companion to deal extra damage. Game Science said it aims to preserve what players loved about Wukong while tailoring the sequel to its new protagonist, but cautioned the game remains work-in-progress, with some systems still "experimental" and subject to change before launch. Zhong Kui, announced almost a year earlier at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, is in development for PC and unspecified "major consoles" with no release date yet confirmed. The studio has previously faced scrutiny over allegations of sexism within its ranks, including reported misogynistic comments from co-founder Féng Jì.

Chinese studio Game Science shot to fame with Black Myth: Wukong, an action game based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which became one of the best-selling titles of 2024. Zhong Kui is its follow-up, centred on a different figure from Chinese mythology, a deity traditionally associated with vanquishing ghosts and demons, rather than being a direct continuation of Wukong's story.

The game was first announced roughly a year ago at Gamescom, a major annual video games trade show in Germany, and remains without a confirmed release date. It is being developed for PC and consoles, though specific platforms have not been named, and Game Science has been cautious to describe it as an early, evolving project rather than a finished product.

The wider significance lies in how a hugely popular studio follows up a breakout hit: fans and industry watchers are keen to see whether Zhong Kui will refine or depart from the combat style and structure that made Wukong so successful, particularly given China's growing presence in big-budget video game development.
