2 Years Ago Today, We Lost the Grateful Dead Legend Who Turned His Father’s Final Days Into One of the Band’s Most Beloved Songs
Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh died aged 84 on 25 October 2024. A founding member throughout the band’s three-decade run, he helped make the bass a more prominent and exploratory force in rock, complementing Jerry Garcia’s guitar playing.
Lesh began with violin, then studied trumpet, composition and avant-garde music before Garcia invited him to join the Warlocks in 1965, despite his having never played bass. He quickly developed an unconventional style shaped by classical and jazz influences, co-wrote much of the 1968 album *Anthem of the Sun*, and composed the melody for “Box of Rain”. Lyricist Robert Hunter said Lesh wanted a song to sing to his dying father; Hunter supplied the words.

Explained simply
The Grateful Dead were an American rock band formed in the 1960s, known for long, improvisational performances and a mix of rock, folk, jazz and other styles. Phil Lesh was their bassist from the early Warlocks days in 1965 through the band’s three-decade run, playing alongside singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia.
Lesh had studied violin, trumpet, composition and avant-garde music before joining, and had never played bass. His classical and jazz influences helped give the instrument a more prominent, exploratory role in the band’s sound. “Box of Rain” grew from his wish to sing to his dying father: Lesh wrote its melody, and lyricist Robert Hunter supplied the words.
