20 years after the film that changed everything, Anvil frontman Steve ‘Lips’ Kudrow has no regrets
The 2008 documentary *Anvil! The Story Of Anvil* introduced the Canadian metal band to a much wider audience, at a time when frontman Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow was delivering school meals. Nearly 20 years later, Kudlow says the film helped create the audience the band has today, and he has no regrets about letting it show the band’s struggles as well as its successes.
Anvil will tour Britain and Ireland with a set focused on their first three albums: *Hard ‘N’ Heavy*, *Metal on Metal* and *Forged in Fire*, released between 1981 and 1983. Kudlow says many concertgoers first discovered the band through the film, and the shows are intended to introduce them to its older songs. The band has released seven albums since the documentary and is preparing to record its 21st, after allowing time following 2024’s *One And Only*.
In short
- The documentary brought Anvil a new generation of fans.
- Kudlow says he has no regrets about its candid portrayal.
- The upcoming tour will feature songs from the band’s first three albums.
Explained simply
Anvil are a Canadian heavy metal band formed in the 1970s, with Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow as their singer and guitarist. They released their first three albums in the early 1980s, when they were building a following but had not achieved broad commercial success.
The 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil followed Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner as the band continued making music and trying to reach a wider audience. It brought Anvil to the attention of many people who had not known their earlier work.
The band’s history helps explain why its older songs remain part of its live shows. Anvil has continued releasing albums since the film, and its planned British and Irish tour will focus on those first three records.
