American Songwriter has revisited three tracks from 1965 that it says dominated the car stereos of teenagers taking their first drives, drawing on nostalgia for the era's biggest pop and rock hits. The feature is part of the outlet's regular "The List" series celebrating classic songs from past decades, highlighting tracks that became generational touchstones for young listeners at the time.

The three songs are "Help!" by The Beatles, a summer 1965 chart-topper across the US, UK and Canada that John Lennon later described as a genuine cry for help despite its upbeat sound; "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones, which reached No. 1 globally and became an anthem of teenage rebellion despite controversy over its suggestive lyrics; and "My Girl" by The Temptations, released in late 1964 but a chart-topping smash on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts in early 1965.
