David Gilmour is best known as the guitarist and singer who helped drive Pink Floyd to global success, but throughout his career he has also lent his talents to a number of notable projects beyond the band. American Songwriter highlights four such contributions, spanning from the late 1960s to the 1980s, that show his influence extending well beyond Pink Floyd's own catalogue and into the careers of other significant musicians.

These include his production and playing work on former Pink Floyd bandmate Syd Barrett's two 1970 solo albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett; his decisive early support for a 14-year-old Kate Bush, whom he funded to record a professional demo that secured her an EMI recording contract in 1973; his guitar work on Paul McCartney's 1984 hit single "No More Lonely Nights"; and his production help on The Dream Academy's 1985 hit "Life In A Northern Town", a favour later returned when the band's singer co-wrote lyrics for Pink Floyd's 1994 album The Division Bell.
