American Songwriter highlights four rock songs released in 1997 that it says have remained familiar singalongs for people who grew up in the 1990s. The selection reflects the decade’s varied rock landscape, spanning pop-rock, alternative influences, hard rock and singer-songwriter material.

The songs are Sugar Ray’s chart-topping “Fly”, U2’s “Staring At The Sun”, Aerosmith’s Grammy-winning “Pink”, and John Mellencamp’s “Just Another Day”. “Fly” spent eight weeks at number one, while U2 released several singles from its Pop album that year; “Pink” also came from Aerosmith’s Nine Lives, which produced another successful single.
