4 Years Ago, Matthew Mercer Almost Killed Off an Entire Critical Role Party

Polygon ·

A 2022 fight between Critical Role’s Bells Hells and Otohan Thull nearly wiped out the party, marking the first time in the show’s history that a total-party kill seemed possible. Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer later described the encounter as one of his favourite moments, recalling how the players realised they faced a threat beyond their ability to handle.

Thull, a level 20 fighter, ambushed the group as they tried to rescue Armand Treshi from the Paragon’s Call headquarters in Campaign 3, episode 33. She and her shadowy warriors knocked several characters unconscious and killed Orym, Fearne and Laudna; Fearne was revived, then used her last available revival to bring Orym back after a coin toss. Thull left after Imogen failed a Wisdom saving throw and unleashed a storm that damaged buildings in Bassuras.

In short

  • Otohan Thull nearly caused Critical Role’s first total-party kill.
  • Orym, Fearne and Laudna died during the fight.
  • Mercer later called the encounter one of his favourite moments.
