’40 Watts From Nowhere’: How a Feisty Pirate Radio Station Stormed the Airwaves in 1990s Silver Lake With Help From the Red Hot Chili Peppers and More
KBLT, a low-power pirate radio station, broadcast an eclectic mix of music in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, from 1995 to 1998. Its story is told in the documentary “40 Watts From Nowhere”, which revisits the neighbourhood’s independent music scene and shows how a community-run station offered an alternative to mainstream radio.
Journalist and music lover Sue Carpenter started KBLT after learning how to build a low-power station, with help from radio enthusiast Stephen Dunifer and local musicians. The station ran around the clock, featuring genres from French pop and jazz to punk and techno, with DJs including members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Minutemen and the Germs. Rediscovered footage filmed by DJ Robert Sullivan helped Carpenter shape the documentary, which premiered at Slamdance and is due to stream on Amazon Prime.
