Jackson, an ally of Platner, secured the backing of the vast majority of delegates chosen over the weekend, effectively clearing his path to the nomination as rival contenders dropped out of contention.

Delegates aligned with Jackson won the large majority of 500 available slots across Maine's 16 counties during two days of delegate selection on Saturday and Sunday. His emergence follows Platner's exit from the closely watched Senate race, which is seen as one of the more competitive contests as Democrats seek to challenge Collins, a longtime incumbent, in the upcoming election.
