55 Years Ago Today, the First Couple of Country Music Released Their Debut Album Together—and It Became a Top Five Hit
George Jones and Tammy Wynette released their first joint album, *We Go Together*, on 18 October 1971. The record helped establish them as a major country music duo, blending their contrasting styles and giving Jones a fresh start at Epic Records.
Jones had paid $300,000 to leave Musicor, surrendering the rights to his recordings there so he could record with Wynette. Produced by Billy Sherrill, *We Go Together* reached number three on the country albums chart, while its lead single, “Take Me”, became their first top 10 hit. They later recorded nine studio albums and scored eight top 10 singles, including two number-one hits, despite divorcing in 1975.
