60 Years Later, Mary Jane Is Finally Stepping Out of Spider-Man’s Shadow
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Mary Jane Watson's first full appearance in Spider-Man comics, and Marvel is marking the occasion with a new anthology titled Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger. The release reflects on MJ's evolution from Peter Parker's love interest into a fully-fledged character in her own right, having taken on roles ranging from superhero ally to the host of Venom, alongside her ongoing romantic history with Peter, including its erasure in the One More Day storyline.
The anthology compiles three stories spanning different eras of MJ's history, from her early "party girl" days to her marriage to Peter and her stint as the All-New Venom, plus an epilogue teasing future storylines. Preview pages show a tense breakfast scene in which MJ senses something is wrong with Peter, who is later revealed to be the villain Chameleon in disguise, alongside a lighter moment from Vamp #9 and a reflective, older-MJ story titled "Soft Words at Sunset".

Marvel first introduced Mary Jane Watson as a fully seen character in Spider-Man comics 60 years ago, and since then she has grown from a supporting love interest into one of the most enduring figures in the Spider-Man universe. Over the decades she has appeared in many guises, including a party-loving free spirit, Peter Parker's wife, and at one point the host of the alien symbiote Venom. Her relationship with Peter has also had a complicated history, including a controversial storyline, One More Day, in which their marriage was magically undone.
To mark the anniversary, Marvel has published a new anthology called Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger, bringing together stories from different points in her history. It includes tales from her early days, her married life with Peter, and her time as a Venom host, alongside a closing section that hints at future storylines for the character.
Mary Jane remains one of the most recognisable characters in the Spider-Man franchise, so new material exploring her own story, rather than her role in Peter's, is of interest to long-time comic readers and to those who know her mainly from films and other adaptations.
