On 7 September 1961, George Jones's self-penned single "Tender Years" held the number one spot on the Billboard country chart, marking his second chart-topper and a pivotal moment in his rise to become known as "the King of Country Music". Co-written with childhood friend Darrell Edwards and produced by Shelby Singleton, the song is credited by critics with showcasing a deeper, more restrained vocal style that defined the sound Jones became famous for.

"Tender Years" was released in February 1961 and spent 32 weeks on the Billboard country chart, seven of them at number one, while also reaching number 76 on the pop chart. The song later inspired foreign-language covers, including "Tes tendres années" by French singer Johnny Hallyday, which topped the chart in the Netherlands, and a version by Dutch singer Willeke Alberti that peaked at number two there. Jones went on to score another number one the following year with "She Thinks I Still Care".
