7 Years Later, Apple’s Gaming Push Has Proven Surprisingly Resilient
Seven years after Apple Arcade launched amid doubts about the viability of tech companies’ gaming ambitions, Apple continues to expand its gaming efforts. A new App Store showcase for independent games, led by the store’s new head Carson Oliver, points to Apple’s aim of making its platform a more established home for premium indie titles.
Oliver says gaming has long been central to the App Store, and Apple is investing in hardware and developer tools to support games. A forthcoming iPhone and iPad version of No Man’s Sky will include ten years of updates in a 5GB download and run on an iPhone 11. Apple also says human curation and developer services can help games reach players in a crowded marketplace.
