The song has been sung by Wolverines fans during the third quarter of home games since 2016, a custom originally intended to energise players and unite supporters. Wallen, a Tennessee native with no personal ties to Michigan, went to considerable lengths to honour the local culture during his performance.

Beyond the singalong, Wallen brought out former Michigan football star Aidan Hutchinson for his walkout and changed mid-show into a Glen Rice Michigan basketball jersey, telling the crowd the venue was "pretty damn cool." His Friday attendance of roughly 75,000 falls well short of the stadium's record of 112,408, set by Zach Bryan in September, and it appears unlikely his combined weekend shows will surpass that mark, though the performance is still being hailed as a memorable one.
