The recognition highlights a broader shift on TikTok mirroring wider streaming trends, where older "catalogue" tracks are increasingly displacing new releases in popularity, with the entire US top four this year made up of songs released before 2024.

TikTok says "The One That Got Away" featured in over 42 million videos and drew more than 55 billion views this summer, having spent 21 weeks on the Billboard Global 200 and surpassed 1.8 billion Spotify streams. The US top four also includes Mac Miller's "Cinderella" (2016), Lenny Kravitz's "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" (1991) and Malcolm Todd's "Earrings" (2024). Separately, TikTok's UK Song of the Summer is "Do You Mind" by Kyla and DJ Paleface (2008), later sampled on Drake's "One Dance", which racked up 543 million UK video views; the UK list also features two Oasis tracks, with "Wonderwall" seeing a 6,800% surge in searches during England's World Cup run.
