Bear enters California library before opening and eats snacks
A bear wandered into Mammoth Lakes Library in California before opening time and helped itself to snacks, including honey, peanut butter and peach cups. The incident was captured on surveillance video; no staff were present and the bear left without causing damage.
Library director Josef Bopp said the bear entered at about 6.10am, while the library opens at 10am. The visit coincided with the 100th anniversary of the first Winnie-the-Pooh book, prompting a local joke that the bear was looking for a copy. Officials reminded people to keep their distance from wild bears, avoid feeding them and secure rubbish and vehicles.

Mammoth Lakes is a town in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, where black bears live near human settlements. Bears may be drawn to food smells from rubbish, vehicles and buildings, especially when food is left unsecured.
The library is a public building that serves local residents, and its director is Josef Bopp. The incident also brought to mind Winnie-the-Pooh, the fictional bear whose first book was published in 1926. Wild bears can be dangerous, so officials advise people to keep their distance and not feed them.
