Netflix’s new A Different World initially leans heavily on its predecessor, bringing back familiar characters and storylines while introducing a younger generation at Hillman College. Although this nostalgia can make the opening episodes feel repetitive, the series gradually develops its own identity through a charming ensemble, thoughtful writing and heartfelt contemporary drama.

The story follows Deborah, the impulsive daughter of Whitley and Dwayne, alongside Shaquille, the son of their former college friend Ron. Returning figures and references to Hillman’s history enrich the world, while a potential divorce between Whitley and Dwayne adds emotional weight; however, the show becomes strongest from about its fourth episode, when it focuses on the students’ romances, friendships and university pressures.
