‘A Different World’ Sequel Series Drops First Look at New Generation of Hillman Students

Variety · 23 hours ago

Netflix has released first-look images and cast details for its sequel series to the classic sitcom "A Different World", confirming a premiere date of 24 September. Like the original 1980s-90s show, the new series is set at the fictional historically Black college Hillman, and follows Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she begins her freshman year. The revival has been years in the making, having first been reported as in development in 2024 before receiving a rare Netflix pilot order in March 2025 and a full series pickup in November.

Deborah is the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, played respectively by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy, both of whom reprise their roles alongside original cast members Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell. She is joined by a new ensemble of students, including Rashida Duvall, Shaquille Johnson, Amir Rodale, Hazel Henry and Kojo Achebe. Felicia Pride writes and showruns the series, with Debbie Allen directing three episodes including the premiere, alongside fellow executive producers Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. The original "A Different World" launched as a "Cosby Show" spin-off in 1987 and ran for six seasons on NBC.
