The revelation matters to fans because it recontextualises a puppet-themed episode from the current fourth season, showing that a major emotional beat was reshot after producers decided to change the story's framing, altering how the characters' relationship ended on screen.

In the episode "Level-Five Transporter Accident," a transporter malfunction turns the Enterprise crew into puppets, with the mishap eventually revealed as a dream Spock is having. Chong explained that the breakup between Spock and La'an was originally filmed with her as a puppet, but producers later decided the episode should be framed as a dream, requiring the couple's split to be re-filmed "in real life" instead; this reshoot, done near the end of production, became the last scene Peck and Chong shot together. Peck said he was proud of the original, puppet-version breakup scene for being emotionally powerful, though it may never be seen unless released as a deleted scene. The show's fifth and final season is set to air next year, and Strange New Worlds is currently streaming on Paramount+.
