“A quite beautiful compromise”: The LEGO Skylines devs did consider brick by brick building, but decided it was too much fuss for players

The developers of *LEGO Skylines* considered letting players build structures brick by brick, but decided the process would be too laborious with a mouse and keyboard, especially in a game that also requires managing a city. Instead, players place template buildings and customise them with features such as hot tubs, flowerbeds and letterboxes. Producer Joanna Ronkanen described this as a compromise that allows substantial customisation without requiring players to assemble every structure piece by piece.

The game, made by Iceflake Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, is a city-builder in which homes, businesses and utilities connect through roads, with prosperity linked to residents’ happiness. The article’s preview found its familiar, gentle city-building systems enjoyable but somewhat underwhelming, and argues that freeform construction could create entertaining challenges for those systems. Game director Lasse Liljedahl said more brick-related features will be revealed later; the developers have not yet discussed modding support.

  • Brick-by-brick construction was considered but judged too fiddly.
  • Players can customise template buildings instead.
  • Developers say more building features are still to come.
