Brandon Klayme has been acquitted in Nova Scotia after spending 18 months in prison for offences he did not commit, following a mistaken identification linked to a Skyrim-inspired Kik username. The case highlights how a minor error in digital evidence can lead to a wrongful conviction when investigators and courts fail to distinguish between nearly identical online accounts.

Police tracing a 2020 Wisconsin child-exploitation investigation confused the suspect’s username, `fus__ro_dah`, with Klayme’s `fus_ro_dah`; the former contained two underscores after “fus”, while Klayme’s had one. Despite the discrepancy, Klayme was convicted in 2023 and given 18 months in prison plus 18 months’ probation, until appeal lawyers noticed the difference in 2026. The appeal court found no connection between Klayme and the victim or offending material, and authorities now believe the relevant account belongs to someone in California.
