Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was inspired by Jim Steinman’s unfinished ideas for a musical adaptation of the vampire story *Nosferatu*. The song became a major international success despite its unusually long running time for radio, reaching number one for four weeks and helping establish Tyler’s move from country-leaning music towards rock.

Written and produced by Steinman for Tyler’s fifth album, *Faster Than the Speed of Night*, the single ran for more than five and a half minutes, while the album version lasted almost seven. Tyler sought out Steinman after seeing Meat Loaf perform his work; she later recalled that Meat Loaf, who had lost his voice around the recording period, regretted not recording the song himself.
