Aaron Carter Estate Settles With Walgreens in Wrongful Death Lawsuit Over Xanax Prescriptions

Billboard ·

Aaron Carter’s estate has settled its wrongful death claims against Walgreens and Santa Monica Medical Plaza Pharmacy over Xanax prescriptions filled before the singer died in 2022. The settlement resolves the claims against both pharmacies, while a case against Carter’s former dentist remains scheduled for trial in January.

The financial terms were not disclosed. Carter drowned at 34 with drugs in his system; defendants argued that compressed-air gas, rather than Xanax, caused his death and that the Xanax level was not enough to make him lose consciousness. His family’s claims alleged that the prescriptions were overprescribed and filled without checks for misuse; a psychiatry clinic settled in May, and the dentist denies liability.
