Employees at ABC News' digital division have voted unanimously to unionise with the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE), joining the union that has represented staff in ABC News' television operations for decades. The move matters as it extends collective bargaining rights to digital newsroom staff at a time when the media industry is undergoing rapid technological and structural change, with workers saying they want a say in shaping ABC News' future.

The election, counted on Friday 31 July, saw all voters in the roughly 50-member bargaining unit — covering digital reporters, editors, video producers and social media producers at ABCNews.com and ABC News' social platforms — back WGAE representation. ABC and the union said they had reached agreement on the representation process following "productive and constructive discussions". WGAE, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and has more than 7,500 members across film, TV, news, podcasts and online media, already represents workers at outlets including CBS News, MS NOW and Fox 5 WNYW-TV; separately, the union is also involved in an antitrust lawsuit seeking to block the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
