A Barnsley man has been sentenced for a violent assault on his girlfriend following a brief and tumultuous relationship in which he repeatedly accused her of infidelity. During a New Year's Eve 2024 incident, he smashed a glass against his own head and falsely blamed his partner, then physically attacked her, resulting in facial fractures and head trauma.

The victim and her children, who heard the violence from upstairs, experienced lasting psychological harm including nightmares and anxiety, prompting the family to relocate and the children to change schools. The judge opted for a suspended 32-month sentence spanning three years with mandatory rehabilitation sessions, determining that immediate custody would prevent the man from addressing his behaviour through professional intervention.
